Wanda & The White Boys

Wanda & The White Boys on New Years Eve 2007

Wanda & The White Boys is a band that has built a reputation for always providing the right musical atmosphere for any occasion - from a concert for 10,000 people to an intimate wedding reception.

History

It was a dark and stormy night....  Well, it was actually a clear night, but that beginning sounded better.  ACTUALLY, it all began on March 7, 1987 when we played for a fund-raising event for ShenanArts, a local theater company based in Staunton, Virginia.  Marc Taylor, our original rhythm guitar player at the time, was a ShenanArts board member and was asked to gather a group of musicians to back "the singing lady that did make-up".  Paul Hildebrand, the director of ShenanArts at that time, had overheard Wanda singing to herself in the make-up room, and well, the rest is history...  The band performed that fateful day as Wanda & The Hardy Boys (a play on Wanda's former last name and thought up by Paul for the event).  After that pleasurable one-hour experience, we decided to see if anyone else would enjoy the music we liked making together!  However, The Boys decided that the original name had to go.  After much discussion (naming a band is the hardest thing a musician has to do - just ask one!), we decided that the only thing we had in common (except for our love of music) was that, except for Wanda, we were all white!  :-)  Hence the name, Wanda & The White Boys.

We were born in a log cabin in West Virginia...  (Naw, just kidding... just trying to make this more interesting).  The band is still based in Staunton, and most of the band members live there or nearby (though some live down South in Roanoke).

Type of Music, Song List, and Sample

We decided long ago that our goal while playing music is to have fun.  Almost everyone that hears us picks up on that, and they have a lot of fun as well.  We play Rock and Roll from the 50's to the 90's, and can also perform a set of swing and instrumental standards for a more "relaxed" atmosphere.  However, our greatest strength is that we are a true "variety" band.

We're very popular at wedding receptions since we can play music from just about any generation.  We take requests for waltzes or rambunctious polkas.  Witness a recent wedding reception where we played a "everyone on the dance floor" rendition of Hokey Pokey.

And we're just as comfortable playing in a concert setting.  We have opened for Three Dog Night, The Tams, The Spinners, The Association, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.  We've played a week-long tour of Ireland twice (in 1990 and in 1999) and have headlined the Waynesboro Extravaganza (a July 4th celebration in Virginia).  Wanda's favorite performance each year is Charlottesville's Fridays After 5 concert series (we have performed for that event the last four years).

Please visit our Song List page for a listing of some of the music we play.

If your computer is equipped with a sound card and loudspeakers, you're welcome to download a two minute and thirteen second MP3 sample of some of our music.  Since we didn't want to reduce the sound quality of our original recordings too much, the file size of this sample is pretty big (it will take about 7 minutes to download with a 56k modem).  For most of you, all you need to do is click the above link and the sample will automatically start playing after downloading.  However, some older computers won't already have the proper media playback software installed, and you'll have to add RealOne Player, Windows Media Player, MusicMatch Jukebox, Winamp, or some other software to your system to hear the sample.  Enjoy!
